DCSD Transfers Rosenwald To CareSouth Carolina For Health Services Expansion In Society Hill

DCSD TRANSFERS ROSENWALD PROPERTY TO CARESOUTH CAROLINA FOR HEALTH SERVICES EXPANSION IN SOCIETY HILL

The Darlington County School District (DCSD) has completed the transfer of the former Rosenwald Elementary School property in Society Hill to CareSouth Carolina. The Board of Education approved the transfer of the 11.5-acre property for $1 to support the expansion of community-based health services in the Society Hill area.

“This partnership reflects responsible stewardship of district property and a commitment to strengthening the Society Hill community,” said Dr. Matthew Ferguson, DCSD superintendent. “While this facility no longer serves students as a school, it remains an important part of this community’s story. By partnering with CareSouth Carolina, we are helping ensure the property continues to serve families in meaningful ways while preserving its legacy.”

CareSouth Carolina CEO Ann Lewis said the organization is looking forward to using the facility for new and expanded opportunities in the community. “We are deeply honored and excited to announce that the Darlington County School District has officially deeded the Rosenwald Elementary School facility to our organization,” Lewis said. “This meaningful gesture not only preserves and sustains an important historical landmark, but also paves the way for new and expanded opportunities to serve our community.”

The property, which includes the Rosenwald Elementary School building and facilities, sits on approximately 11.5 acres in Society Hill. In the future, CareSouth Carolina plans to provide community health resources and opportunities for the residents of Society Hill and Darlington County, such as health information meetings, health screenings, a satellite clinic for administering vaccinations and flu shots, adult daycare programs, assistance with the prevention of and treatment of chronic diseases and other community programs that will benefit local citizens.

CareSouth Carolina will also make a portion of the property available for use by the Rosenwald Alumni Association, allowing that organization to continue its mission of preserving the school’s important history.

The agreement includes a reverter clause to ensure the property remains dedicated to the outlined purposes. Should CareSouth Carolina discontinue those uses or seek to transfer the property for another purpose, ownership will revert to DCSD.

This transfer represents a shared commitment to preserving local history while expanding access to essential services for the residents of Society Hill and Darlington County.
