Celebrating the Remarkable Career and Retirement of Dr. George Gibson Moore, Jr.

McColl, SC — After decades of dedicated service to the community of McColl and beyond, Dr. George Gibson Moore Jr., a respected figure in the medical field, announces his retirement. Dr. Moore leaves behind a legacy of compassion, expertise, and unwavering commitment to the well-being of his patients.

Dr. Moore began his journey in medicine by working in the pharmacy as a teenager. As a third-generation physician, he obtained his Medical Degree from the Medical University of South Carolina with plans to move back home to McColl. His passion for healing led him to specialize in Family Medicine, a field where he excelled and made a lasting impact on countless lives.

Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Moore served in various esteemed positions, including roles at Marlboro General Hospital, Marlboro Park Hospital, Coastal Physicians, Pee Dee Emergency Physicians, and Scotland Memorial Hospital, among others. His dedication extended beyond the hospital walls, as he also served as a Medical Control Officer for Marlboro County Rescue and contributed his expertise as a Physician in the Public Health Service Core.

Dr. Moore's commitment to service is exemplified by his tenure as a Lieutenant Commander of the Medical Corp in the United States Navy, where he served as a physician during the Vietnam War. His bravery and dedication to caring for others in the midst of adversity are a testament to his character and unwavering sense of duty.

Dr. Stephen L. Smith, former Chief Medical Officer and active Physician at CareSouth Carolina’s Society Hill office, reflects on Dr. Moore's legacy: "For something like 100 years, there has been a Dr. Moore in McColl. Not only our Dr. Moore, but a Dr. Moore in McColl. His reputation preceded him, and his dedication to his patients and community has been exemplary."

Ann Lewis, CEO of CareSouth Carolina, echoes these sentiments: "Dr. Moore's impact on our community cannot be overstated. His dedication to his patients was unparalleled, and his presence will be greatly missed."

Dr. Moore himself shares fond memories of his journey: "I started when I was a teenager working in the drug store. I went and got my medical license, came back and had an office in the back of the drug store. More than anything else, I just enjoyed meeting the people and building relationships with them.” 

Dr. Moore’s son, Gibson Moore III, shared that his legacy is evident in the community: “To this day, you can’t go anywhere here in McColl or Bennettsville without people recognizing him and talking to him. He’s left such a legacy."

Dr. Moore's contributions to McColl extend beyond his medical practice. His marriage to Mary Tom, a nurse he met in the hospital, exemplifies his deep connections within the community. Additionally, his tenure as an Emergency Medicine Physician and his role as a trusted figure at CareSouth Carolina has cemented his place in the hearts of many.

Pat Graham, Site Manager at CareSouth Carolina McColl, affectionately describes Dr. Moore as a "gentle giant" and reflects on his family's longstanding presence in the community: "There has been a 'Dr. Moore' in our community for over 110 years. He will be greatly missed, but he left a giant footprint with his legacy."
