CareSouth Carolina’s Latta Office Puts Fun Twist on Fight Against Hunger

LATTA, S.C. — A friendly competition at CareSouth Carolina’s Latta office ended with a pie to the face, plenty of laughs and, most importantly, more support for families across the Pee Dee.

Latta Site Administrator Tara Stubbs recently earned the opportunity to pie Dr. Johnathan Davis, who provides chiropractic care at the Latta office, after the two went head-to-head in a fundraising competition supporting CareSouth Carolina’s annual “Hunger Games.”

The Hunger Games is CareSouth Carolina’s internal friendly competition for 2026 with a simple goal: collect as many canned goods as possible to support the organization’s food pantries. CareSouth Carolina sites across the Pee Dee participate each year, collecting food to help patients and community members facing food insecurity.

The Latta office has already collected more than 5,000 pounds of food during this year’s effort.

The pie competition started after Stubbs agreed to take a pie to the face if the office raised $500. Davis jokingly volunteered to be the person to throw it, but the Latta team had another idea. A staff member challenged Davis to compete against Stubbs instead. Whoever raised the most money would get to pie the other.

“Team Tara” ultimately came out on top, raising $425.75 compared to $107 raised by “Team Dr. Davis.”

That meant Stubbs got the final laugh — and Davis got the pie.

While the competition gave staff members a chance to have some fun, Stubbs said the purpose behind the Hunger Games means much more.

“Our patients, I want them to be taken care of totally,” Stubbs said. “The whole person. That means not just their medical needs, but also their physical, emotional and mental needs. If they don’t have food, they’re not going to be healthy. We’re able to have fun while also taking care of our patients’ needs.”

That commitment to caring for the whole person is also at the center of what Stubbs believes makes CareSouth Carolina’s Latta office special.

“Latta is home,” Stubbs said. “It’s a good place with good people, and we treat you like family. We know you by name, and that is important. It’s personal.”
