CareSouth Carolina welcomes Dr. Clara Cabrera Fermin to Dillon office

April 5th 2021

CareSouth Carolina welcomes Dr. Clara Cabrera Fermin as the newest provider at the Dillon office.

Dr. Cabrera Fermin, the third provider to join the CSC Dillon team, specializes in Internal Medicine. Internal Medicine is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of internal diseases.

“It’s a combination of education and treatment when it comes to healthcare,” Dr. Cabrera Fermin said. “It’s not just about compliance and managing chronic conditions. I want to advocate for my patients and encourage them to learn about their illness and make sure they know they are the ones who make the choice when it comes to their health.”

Dr. Cabrera Fermin completed her Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Texas Health at San Antonio earned her Doctor of Medicine at Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra. Prior to completing her residency, Dr. Cabrera Fermin worked at the Diabetes Institute of Santiago in Santiago, Dominican Republic as an Emergency Room and Outpatient Clinic Physician.

Dr. Cabrera Fermin is bilingual- speaking both English and Spanish- and said her motivation was to work with patients in a clinic setting, rather than in a hospital.

“Even before residency, I knew that I wanted to do outpatient care instead of inpatient because you have the ability to develop relationships with patients instead of just treating an acute illness. Taking care of an underserved population was something I was passionate about and that’s why I’m excited to be here in the Dillon community.”

Dr. Cabrera Fermin said the goal of health care is to focus on prevention.

“I want to look at the patient as a whole. Everyone has different aspects of their life and they all contribute and affect their health status,” Dr. Cabrera Fermin said. “Especially with primary care, it’s meant to be a safe space. In the end, the goal is to make changes and to treat risk factors before they arise.”

Outside of work, she enjoys cooking, reading and loves spending time at the beach.

To schedule an appointment with Dr. Cabrera Fermin, please call 843-774-4337.
