May 1st 2019

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

CareFIRST Carolina Foundation hosts regional golf tournament

Proceeds will help support the MILES OF SMILES Dental Children’s dental program.

Hartsville SC – CareFIRST Carolina Foundation is sponsoring our annual Golf Tournament on Wednesday May 15, 2019 at Cheraw State Park.  Money raised by this tournament will be used for School Based children’s services, the MILES OF SMILES dental program and the ROADS team school based medical outreach program.  Allowing children with no health care home or dental provider a way to access much needed care. Proceeds from this event insure that no child in pain is turned away.  The MILES OF SMILES school based dental program is for the children of five area counties (Chesterfield, Darlington, Dillon, Lee and Marlboro counties) Ann Lewis Executive Director  for CareFIRST said “This is a much needed  project. The fact that over 22,000 children in our area have no dental insurance or can not afford any preventative care is something that together we can do something about.”

The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 1 pm. There is a $20,000 prize for a hole in one on hole number 5. Teams of 4 are captains choice (you bring your own team) best ball and are a $250.00 donation to CareFIRST Carolina Foundation. Walk on players are welcome at $70.00 per player.  Come join us and support better oral health in our region.

Mark Sobiski CareFIRST Carolina Foundation, Foundation Director said “The stressful economic picture of our region is causing more and more families and especially the children to have to go without dental services which is one of the leading causes of school absenteeism” The South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services records show only 36% of children on Medicaid under the age of 18 received any preventative dental service .

The CareFIRST Carolina Foundation is working to raise these funds to purchase and supply the School based MILES OF SMILES dental program that will serve the Medicaid and underserved children of five counties, and it will be operated by qualified dentist, dental hygienists and staff from CareSouth Carolina.  Charlie Gray, the Foundations president said, “This unit will be able to address both the area’s unmet dental needs as well as help alleviate some of the transportation problems faced by many of our patients. It will give CareSouth Carolina the ability to bring dental services directly to those who need them using an existing community center, church, or local school as a service delivery point.”

CareFIRST Carolina is a regional private operating foundation that raises funds and project capital for CareSouth Carolina, a regional community health center providing health services for the underserved citizens in 5 area counties (Chesterfield, Darlington, Dillon, Lee and Marlboro counties)
