Job Description

Under the guidance of the State Long Term Care Ombudsman and the Regional Long Term Care Ombudsman and the supervision of the Area Agency on Aging Director and the Finance/Operations Manager, the Volunteer Ombudsman Coordinator recruits and trains Volunteer Friendly Visitors.  The Volunteer Ombudsman Coordinator visits residents of long term care and assisted living facilities.  The Coordinator along with the Volunteer Friendly Visitors are a resource for improving the quality of life for residents as well as identifying issues and potential problems that can be addressed before intervention is needed by the Long Term Care Ombudsman or other appropriate regulatory agency.  Training will be provided by the South Carolina Department on Aging State Ombudsman office.  Travel to Columbia is required for training.  Travel to facilities in our 6 counties is required.  Candidate MUST PASS a test in order to become certified. The duties include the following:

  • Recruiting volunteers (one volunteer per county)
  • Training volunteers
  • Resolve residents’ minor concerns
  • Reports complaints to the Regional Long Term Care Ombudsman
  • Provides brochures and written information to residents regarding their rights, advance health care directives, and the role of and contact information for the ombudsman to family, residents and facility staff
  • Answers basic questions regarding RLTCOP
  • Maintains confidentiality at all times
  • Shall be free of any Conflict of Interest

Education and Experience

  • A high school diploma and 3 or more years of experience in the field of health or social services
  • Ability to access training needs and objectives
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variable in situations where only limited standardization exists
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral and diagram or schedule form
  • Ability to work independently and handle problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Volunteer Ombudsman Coordinator will be employed by Vantage Point Area Agency on Aging

Hours

Monday – Thursday 10:00 – 3:00 pm and Friday 8:00 am – 1:00 pm. Part-time, 25 hours weekly.
