Job Description

The Optician is responsible for providing high-quality optical services through CareSouth Carolina's Mobile Vision Program by assisting patients with eyewear fitting, dispensing, adjustments, and follow-up care. This position travels throughout rural schools in CareSouth Carolina service areas and community locations using mobile vision unit to deliver vision services directly to patients. Responsibilities include delivering and fitting prescription eyewear, performing vision re-screenings and follow-up testing as directed by the Optometrist, educating patients on proper eyewear use and care, and ensuring patients receive optimal visual outcomes. The duties include the following:

  • Safely operate and transport the CareSouth Carolina Mobile Vision Unit to schools, community sites, and outreach events in accordance with organizational vehicle policies.
  • Maintain a valid driver's license and an acceptable motor vehicle record that meets CareSouth Carolina driver requirements. (CDL not required.)
  • Assist the Optometrist in providing comprehensive mobile vision services.
  • Interpret and verify eyewear prescriptions written by the Optometrist.
  • Dispense, fit, adjust, repair, and troubleshoot prescription eyewear.
  • Deliver prescription eyeglasses to students and patients during scheduled mobile visits.
  • Perform vision re-screenings and follow-up visual acuity testing after patients receive corrective lenses according to established clinical protocols.
  • Identify patients requiring additional evaluation and communicate findings to the Optometrist.
  • Educate students, parents, caregivers, and patients on proper use, cleaning, storage, and maintenance of eyewear.
  • Verify all eyewear meets prescription specifications and quality standards prior to dispensing.
  • Process and track optical laboratory orders and coordinate timely delivery of completed eyewear.
  • Maintain inventory of frames, lenses, optical supplies, and mobile unit equipment.
  • Assist with inventory management and ordering of optical products.
  • Document patient encounters, optical measurements, and services provided within the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, infection prevention, and CareSouth Carolina policies.
  • Perform vehicle inspections and report maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
  • Assist with setup, breakdown, organization, and cleanliness of the mobile vision unit.
  • Participate in school-based outreach events, community health fairs, and vision screening initiatives.
  • Collaborate with providers, school nurses, administrators, and other healthcare team members to ensure continuity of patient care.
  • Handle sensitive patient and employee information with the utmost confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Answer, route, and manage incoming phone calls with professionalism; take accurate messages and ensure timely follow-up.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to emails and Microsoft Teams notifications.
  • Complete and sign off on all required documentation in PowerDMS and Relias in a timely and thorough manner.
  • Proactively take on additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Mobile and Telehealth Services.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. 
  • Three (3) to five (5) years’ experience in field or related field is required.
  • American Borad of Opticianry (ABO) Certification preferred
  • Must be willing and capable of driving the Mobile Unit (CDL Not required).
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license, meet CareSouth Carolina's driver eligibility requirements.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Windows operating systems; strong general computer skills required.
  • Familiarity with standard office equipment and a minimum typing speed of 30 words per minute.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, with a strong commitment to accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals in a diverse community.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and follow a variety of instructions presented in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Effective problem-solving skills.
  • Able to work independently and manage multiple tasks or variables in structured environments.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Hours

 Monday – Friday, Full Time 40 hours per week.
