Job Description
The Mobile Optometric Technician is responsible for providing clinical, technical, and administrative support to the Mobile Optometry Program by assisting the Optometrist in delivering high-quality, patient-centered vision care throughout rural and underserved communities. Working primarily aboard a mobile eye care unit, the technician performs ophthalmic pre-testing, prepares patients for examinations, operates specialized diagnostic equipment, assists with patient flow, maintains clinical equipment, and supports daily mobile clinic operations.
This position requires the ability to work independently in a mobile healthcare environment while maintaining exceptional customer service, professionalism, and adherence to organizational policies, clinical protocols, and regulatory standards. The Mobile Optometric Technician serves patients of all ages, with a primary focus on school-based services, and plays a critical role in improving access to comprehensive vision care throughout the communities served. The duties include the following:
- Responsible for driving the mobile unit from CareSouth site to school location daily.
- Ensure diagnostic equipment is operational and properly calibrated.
- Maintain adequate inventory of clinical supplies and equipment.
- Perform routine cleaning, maintenance, and organization of the mobile clinic.
- Assist in maintaining compliance with infection control, OSHA, HIPAA, and organizational safety standards.
- Report equipment malfunctions or maintenance concerns promptly to Mobile Unit Speaclist.
- Participate in mobile unit quality assurance and readiness activities.
- Obtain and document patient medical, ocular, family, and medication histories.
- Measure and record visual acuity using standardized testing procedures.
- Perform preliminary vision screenings and ophthalmic testing including:
- Autorefraction
- Lensometry
- Non-contact or handheld tonometry
- Color vision testing
- Stereoacuity testing
- Pupillary assessment
- Extraocular muscle evaluation
- Visual field screening
- Capture retinal photographs and optical coherence tomography (OCT) images, when applicable.
- Assist the Optometrist during patient examinations and specialty procedures.
- Educate patients regarding prescribed treatments, medications, eyewear, contact lenses, and follow-up recommendations.
- Prepare examination rooms and equipment between patient encounters following infection prevention standards.
- Ensure accurate documentation within the electronic health record (EHR).
- Collaborate effectively with team members to support a cohesive and productive work environment.
- Create and maintain detailed Excel spreadsheets to track active, inactive, and pending ROADS Optometry student enrollees.
- Partner with the ROADS administrative and clinical teams to support efficient, seamless workflow across programs.
- Handle sensitive patient and employee information with the utmost confidentiality and professionalism.
- Answer, route, and manage incoming phone calls with professionalism; take accurate messages and ensure timely follow-up.
- Respond promptly and professionally to emails and Microsoft Teams notifications.
- Complete and sign off on all required documentation in PowerDMS and Relias in a timely and thorough manner.
- Participation in school-based activities (school registrations, open houses, Treats on the Streets and etc.).
- Proactively take on additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Mobile and Telehealth Services.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Three (3) to five (5) years’ experience in field or related field is required.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Windows operating systems; strong general computer skills required.
- Familiarity with standard office equipment and a minimum typing speed of 30 words per minute.
- Exceptional attention to detail, with a strong commitment to accuracy and thoroughness.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals in a diverse community.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and follow a variety of instructions presented in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Effective problem-solving skills.
- Able to work independently and manage multiple tasks or variables in structured environments.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Must be willing or capable to drive Mobile Unit (CDL Not required).
Hours
Monday – Friday, Full Time 40 hours per week.
