The phlebotomist’s primary responsibility is the collection, labeling and preparation of blood, urine and other
patient specimens for laboratory testing. Responsible for the maintenance of all applicable logs, the filing of
reports and assembling of the appropriate lab report. The phlebotomist also ensures that all reference lab
samples are collected and processed appropriate at all times, assists lab or nursing employees in the care of
patients within limits and under clinic nurse supervision.

Collects blood and other laboratory samples for diagnostic procedures consistent with existing CareSouth
Carolina procedures. Measure(s): venipuncture re-stick and patient complaints
Performs & documents all quality control checks on each test and/or reagent per manufacturer, CareSouth Carolina procedure, or other relevant guideline. Measure(s): quality controls monthly audits
Performs periodic maintenance checks per manufacturer for all CSC lab equipment, CareSouth Carolina procedure, or other relevant guideline. Measure(s): periodic maintenance monthly audits
Collaboration with clinical and other staff to achieve improved patient care & outcome during the medical visit. This collaboration with other staff will strive to improve the patient experience by providing high quality and patient-centered care. This may involve participation in trainings, team meetings and huddles to facilitate the delivery of patient-centered care in all CareSouth medical center sites. This also will involve close collaboration with facilities outside of CSC for referral services when patients are in need of these services. All clinical staff will include the patient in decision making and the plan of care development while being treated at any CSC facility.
Document the results of test results and all other laboratory data in an accurate, complete, timely manner in ECW and all laboratory logs in accordance with CareSouth Carolina procedures and other relevant standards. Measure(s): documentation of test results and logs on monthly audits.
Ensure that two unique patient identifiers appear on all laboratory orders in accordance with CareSouth Carolina procedures. Measure(s) audits of laboratory orders & patient identification
Actively participates and is involved in quality projects, develops PDSAs and is an employee that promotes change concepts within their position and with other positions as a team member at CSC.
Infection control: assures universal precautions are understood and followed by all staff including good hand washing and gloving practices.
Maintains confidentiality in all aspects of the position. Willingly performs other duties as required.
Completes all assignments and signs all documents in PowerDMS in a timely manner. Willing completes additional assignments as requested.
Strong organizational skills and a thorough knowledge of computers (Microsoft office and windows) as required
Ability to self-educate and develop a thorough knowledge of JCAHO standards and performance improvement techniques
Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form with mathematical skills
Ability to work independently and handle problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
