Patient Success Story Fall 2009
August 2009
To Whom it may
concern,
On May 12th,
2008, my 62nd birthday, I received the
life altering news that I suffered from type II
diabetes. I was completely stunned. My amazement
turned to incredible fear, as I remembered my
sister’s battle with the disease that claimed her
life. No matter what anyone told me, I was certain
I was headed toward the same fate.
Being diagnosed
with a disease that wants to kill you is not at all
easy. In fact, it was the hardest thing I’ve ever
done. Family and friends were always there, but it
was the kindness and consideration of the health
care professionals with CareSouth McColl that truly
saved me. I didn’t undertake this journey alone.
My nurse practitioner, Ms. Sylvia McKoy, was there
answering question after question in her reassuring
way. She took away my anxiety by teaching me about
my disease. She let me know that she was available
for me at anytime. This was no empty promise
because I did call on her numerous times. Millie
Grooms was also instrumental in my diabetes
education. Her classes were invaluable to me. She
too, was there whenever the need arose. Pat Graham
found a way to provide me with the insulin my body
needed but I could not afford. Not to forget the
girls in the front office, Ms. Marianne, Ms. Shirley
and Ms. Keisha, they always had kind words when I
called or came in for an appointment.
The day I was told
my illness, my A1C level was 10.8. One year later
by the grace of God and the “angels” of CareSouth,
my A1C level is 5.5. I’ve not required an insulin
injection since November 2008. While I continue to
check my blood sugar levels regularly, and eat the
right foods in the right amounts, I know this
disease could not have been arrested without the
combined efforts of a team of professional dedicated
to changing lives, one patient at a time.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kathleen
