![]() It’s appalling, but it has almost become cliché. South Carolina is right in the middle of the Stroke Belt, and the Pee Dee region is the “buckle” of the belt. Compared to national statistics, death and suffering due to stroke and heart disease are much higher in the Pee Dee than most of the nation, especially among minorities. To do something about it, CSC has applied and is the recipient of a three-year Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health grant to help eliminate disparities in Stroke in Darlington and Marlboro Counties. The StrokeMobile, a van carrying a core team of a Community Care Manager and a Community Outreach Coach, will meet people in their homes and community settings to educate, screen and engage them in curbing the current onslaught of stroke. Partners in the StrokeMobile project include the USC School of Medicine; SC DHEC; American Stroke Association; Butler Heritage Foundation and the Marlboro County Community Development Corporation. First, the StrokeMobile team will visit community settings like churches to provide free screenings and education sessions. Some of these sessions will include an opportunity for groups to engage in long-term health education curricula. Secondly, the StrokeMobile will do home visits with persons who have already had one stroke and will provide navigation, social support and care management services with them and their families. By providing intensive services, the team will help prevent a second stroke, undue suffering or death. So, keep an eye out. The StrokeMobile will begin traveling the roads in February of 2008.
