McColl keeps Spirit of Christmas Alive

If you ask Sue Cutchin how many babies she has delivered in her tenure as a certified nurse midwife in the Cheraw community, she doesn’t know right off the top of her head.  She goes into her desk and pulls out a blue log book that has clearly been managed and carefully taken care of over the years.  She looks up and nonchalantly says she has delivered 960 babies.   Actually, Sue is one of those people that finds herself delivering the babies of women she delivered twenty years earlier - the babies of the babies.  She has been providing OB-GYN services since 1977 – almost all of that time spent providing care in the Cheraw community.   So, now, after 31 years and countless hours spent helping women achieve a healthy pregnancy and providing that personal touch in women’s services, Sue is retiring.

“It’s time,” she says.  “There are other things I want to do.  Repaint my house.  Travel.  Visit my kid’s children.”  She certainly doesn’t look it, but Sue is mother to 14 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.   “I’ve really enjoyed it here.  I hate to give it up in a way.  But, it’s time.  I’m going to miss the people – the patients and staff.   I just want to thank everyone for being so good to me.”

Her patients and those of us at CSC who know how dedicated she has been over the years return that sentiment back to Sue in full.  We certainly want to thank her for being so good to her patients and to us.     She will be sorely missed at CSC and as a staple in the Cheraw community.  Still, Sue will still be around and says she plans to keep her skills up.  She even goes so far as to say that although circumstances never allowed it over the years, she hopes, in the future, to be able to do some work with the Peace Corp.  That’s the Sue we know.
