Lee County Cancer Support Group

McColl keeps Spirit of Christmas Alive

With the help of one of CSC’s most dedicated employees, people in Lee County who have been impacted by cancer have somewhere to go for support.    Barbara Simon, CareSouth Carolina Lab Supervisor, along with Lucretia Mack and Marnie Walls started the Lee County Cancer Support Group in February of 2004.  Since then, the group has grown stronger and more resourceful.   People diagnosed with cancer and their families face many challenges that may leave them feeling overwhelmed, afraid and alone.  Every person has a different way of handling news that a loved one has cancer.  Many people react with shock, disbelief and even anger.  One of the best ways for families to deal with their feelings is to share them with each other.  The group’s meetings were established to provide encouragement during a time that can be very difficult for anyone struggling with cancer.   Support groups can help people affected feel less alone and can improve their ability to deal with the uncertainties and challenges that cancer brings. The meetings are unstructured and involve people with different types of cancer and their families.  It is a place where survivors and their families can bring their feelings of overwhelming suffering or their feelings of triumph.  They are accepted and understood.   The group hopes to be able to help provide assistance with medicine, transportation, etc. in the near future.  The Lee County Cancer Support Group meets every third Thursday of each month from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the conference room at CareSouth Carolina in Bishopville.  Free of charge, the group depends on gifts from the people who believe in their importance or those who simply want to honor a loved one.
