![]() Hope McQueen, Outreach Coordinator for CSC’s Care INNOVATIONS program and the rest of the Care INNOVATIONS staff put a whole lot of sweat and prayers into a new way of commemorating World AIDS Day. That work paid off the morning of December 1st on the steps of Coker College’s Elizabeth Boatwright Performing Arts Center. Instead of a more formal evening event, the Care INNOVATIONS staff planned a walk-a-thon on the campus of Coker College. At least 66 people participated in the walk, including City of Hartsville officials; Coker College students; Hartsville High School and Governor’s School of Science and Mathematics students; members from the Apostolic Assembly in Lydia; CSC staff members; and other individuals from the community. The pre-walk ceremony provided an opportunity for those that have been impacted by HIV or AIDS to come together and publicly commemorate those that have died with HIV/AIDS and those that continue to fight the virus. The ceremony and walk also provided an opportunity to deliver awareness and education about the disease to those that need to hear the message. Plus, Care INNOVATIONS staff was able to raise $1,100 through the event that is being used to help those struggling with HIV or AIDS in our local communities. In South Carolina, there have been over 37 thousand people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. CSC’s Care INNOVATIONS program provides local access to comprehensive HIV/AIDS primary health care services to residents of Chesterfield, Darlington, Lee and Marlboro Counties. These services are provided in an integrated primary care setting and include medical care; pre and post test counseling; medications; care management; behavioral health; dental; transportation; outreach; support groups and assistance with referrals.
